Whiteout street parties will be back for 2024
True North Sports + Entertainment has announced plans for the return of the Winnipeg Whiteout this April.
Just days after the Winnipeg Jets clinched a postseason berth for the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the team's owners sent out a press release indicating its plan to bring back a fan-favourite pastime.
As postseason celebrations and traditions go, the Winnipeg Whiteout just might take the cake.
On Wednesday afternoon, Kevin Donnelly and True North executives will host a media conference from Canada Life Centre alongside Winnipeg mayor Scott Gillingham and premier Wab Kinew highlighting its full plan for this postseason's outdoor celebration.
The expectation is that roadways neighbouring the arena will close in advance of postseason games, while True North Square will once again host parties in the plaza prior to puck drop. The exact details related to street closures, food and drink vendors, timing and entrance/tickets will be divulged on Wednesday.
With a warmer winter and an earlier thaw than typically experience in Manitoba's capital, temperatures have soared to the mid-teens already this spring.
City officials and Jets ownership are both looking forward to the outdoor festivities set to begin for Winnipeg's first home date of the playoffs.
With the Jets' year-end standings placement still left to be determined, supporters of the team are yet to know if the Jets will have home-ice advantage in the first round. Trailing Colorado by just two points, Winnipeg will need to finish with the same number of points or more than the Avalanche to garner second-place in the Central Division, as the Jets own the tiebreaker.
Winnipeg clinched its playoff berth in a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames from Winnipeg last Thursday and has since picked up two more victories (Saturday and Tuesday). The Jets are currently on a four-game winning streak and next face off against the division-leading Dallas Stars on Thursday.
