Winnipeg moves to 30-10-4 on the season with win in Ottawa
Connor Hellebuyck remained red-hot in net, Brenden Dillon set a career-high with his sixth fight of the season, while Nikolaj Ehlers got the job done in overtime on a dazzling play, as the Winnipeg Jets improved to 30-10-4 on the year.
They did so by way of a narrow 2-1 overtime victory in Ottawa against the Senators on Saturday.
Scoring first, the Jets saw Mason Appleton pick up a goal for the second-straight game, as he walked down the middle of the offensive zone and ripped a powerful wrist shot past Joonas Korpisalo in the second period.
The visitors were unable to hold their lead, however, as Parker Kelly knotted things up at ones in the third period, sending the game to extra time.
And it needed almost the full five minutes to determine a winner.
With the first shootout of Winnipeg's 2023-24 season hanging in the balance, Ehlers said, "no chance" and opted to take the puck end-to-end, scoring a highlight-reel worthy winner, sending the Jets to Boston after picking up another two full points.
Winnipeg does face the Bruins on Monday night, before hitting the road to Toronto for the first of two-straight games with the Maple Leafs on Wednesday and Saturday.
The win has the Jets at 64 points in 44 games, by far the best win percentage in the league, but thanks to Vancouver (46) and Boston (45) each having played more games, Winnipeg is no longer first-place across the overall league standings.
