Canadian women win gold in USA
For the third time in four years, the Canadian National Women's Team has proved victorious at the IIHF Women's World Championship.
Of the 23 runnings of the event, the title game has featured a showdown between Canada and the United States 22 times. 2024 was no exception, as Canada took out USA 6-5, and it did so by way of overtime on the road.
Danielle Serdachny was the overtime hero, scoring just 5:16 into the extra frame, giving Canada the gold medal in the process.
“It was amazing; the game in general was just so exciting to be part of," Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin says. "It was back and forth 6-5 I mean it's been a while. We haven't seen a game like that. One team going up the other team coming back. It was very fun to be part of that. As a group, we're very excited about the result, but I think we stuck to it. We stuck through it the whole time. Our second period was our best. We came back in the third period. Overtime was back and forth. It was very fun.”
Poulin scored twice for the Canadians, including a go-ahead tally in the third period, but it was the USA that fought back to tie the game five just five minutes remaining. But in overtime, Serdachny found the winner, beating goaltender Aerin Frankel as her teammates mobbed her in the moments following.
Ste. Anne's Jocelyne Larocque and Deloraine's Ashton Bell were the lone two Manitobans on the squad, and will bring home their gold medals to their respective small communities, before heading back to Toronto and Ottawa, respectively, to continue with their PWHL seasons.
