Dawson Cowan of Warren takes home WHL goaltender of the week award
The Western Hockey League has announced Warren's Dawson Cowan as the league's Goaltender of the Week.
Going 2-1-0 on the week, the 18-year-old Spokane Chiefs netminder posted a .942 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average while also collecting an assist and, wait for it, a goal!
He was credited with an empty net goal after a puck hit him and went the length of the ice into an empty Portland Winterhawks net, getting the final tally in a 5-2 game. Interestingly enough, Cowan actually picked up an assist earlier in the game on what ended up being the game-winner, as he snagged the secondary helper on a Rasmus Ekstrom third-period strike.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound backstop began his week with a 3-0 loss, but bounced back with two straight wins, including the 5-2 victory over Portland and an 8-1 thrashing of the Victoria Royals. He stopped 87 of 93 shots he faced on the week.
The second-year WHL tendy sits 12th in the league with a 5-6-1 record, a .921 save percentage and a 3.06 goals against average.
Spokane just concluded a three-game homestand against Saskatoon, Prince George and Vancouver this past weekend.
