The Manitoba Moose - in conjunction with the Winnipeg Jets - have announced that youthful forwards Brad Lambert and Chaz Lucius have been assigned to the Western Hockey League.
This move will give both players the option to dominate the junior game, while opening up space on Manitoba's roster following the completion of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and the return of several injured players to the Jets' lineup, meaning the assignment of various players to the minors.
Both Lambert (2022) and Lucius (2021) were selected by Winnipeg in the first round of the past two NHL drafts, setting them up for what the team hopes to be lengthy and rewarding professional careers.
But the next step for both players is to continue building their skills within the Western Hockey League, for at least the short-term future.
Lambert, 19, had two goals and three points in 14 games with the Moose this season and scored once for Finland at the World Juniors. His WHL rights were dealt from Saskatoon to Seattle this offseason, and he has since joined the Thunderbirds.
“We are extremely excited to add Brad to our team,” Seattle GM Bill La Forge said. “He has game breaking speed and offensive abilities that will complement the current roster very well. We look forward to getting him in a Thunderbirds jersey soon.”
Lucius, also 19, put up two goals and five points for Manitoba in 12 AHL games this season. His performance with the Americans at the 2023 World Juniors was highlighted by a Bronze Medal Game hat trick and five goals and seven points in seven total games. Lucius signed a WHL deal with the Portland Winterhawks and has since reported to the club.
The Moose will now travel to Toronto where they will face the Marlies at Coca-Cola Coliseum this Wednesday. The game can be heard live on CJOB or viewed on AHL TV. Puck drop is set for 6:00 PM central time.
