Tuesday evening marked the National Hockey League's annual Draft Lottery, to which all 16 clubs out of postseason contention were given their selection slot at the upcoming 2022 NHL Draft held in Montreal, QB. this summer.
With Montreal hosting the large-scale event this July 7-8, it will be an extra special occasion for whomever it is the club opts to select, as the Canadiens earned the right to choose first overall, thanks to the lottery balls in the machine at the NHL Network's office in Secaucus, NJ.
With this highest chance at the first overall pick, Montreal did, in fact, receive the No. 1 selection, retaining their chance at touted No. 1 pick Shane Wright of the Kingston Frontenacs.
This time around, new rules allowed just the top-two selections to be determined by the lottery, with only the bottom 11 of the 16 non-playoff teams eligible to move up in the draft high enough to get to the first pick. Teams could only move up a maximum of 10 spots.
New Jersey did jump ahead of Arizona, Seattle and Philadelphia, while the remaining 11 teams stood pat.
Other notes include that Chicago will send its No. 6 overall selection to Columbus to fulfill the Seth Jones trade, while Buffalo will select both ninth overall, as well as 16th, thanks to the Jack Eichel to Vegas deal, which granted them pick No. 16.
Picks 17-32 will be determined by the results of the playoffs.
