Kyle Connor suffers Knee injury in win over Anaheim
The Winnipeg Jets may need to get used to life without Kyle Connor.
In beating the Anaheim Ducks 4-2 on Sunday evening, the Jets lost their star forward to what appears to be a knee injury.
Head coach Rick Bowness did not divulge much information following the game, other than the fact that the team's leading goal scorer will be re-assessed by team physicians when able, so things could possibly be grim for Winnipeg on that front.
Taking a dangerous knee-on-knee hit in just the first minute of the second period, Connor needed significant help just getting up off the ice and down the Jets' tunnel.
If the replay of the check serves as any indication, Connor may be dealing with an MCL injury similar in nature to the one suffered by Gabriel Vilardi. If fully torn, he could be out for the season.
The team managed to rally for its fallen skater and come from behind with four-straight third period goals, winning the game 4-2.
Postgame, forwards Vilardi and Mark Scheifele spoke on the significance of Connor's injury, while head coach Rick Bowness gave his take on what he called a suspendible offence.
“It’s a knee-on-knee; he sticks his knee out," Bowness said to reporters on scene in Anaheim. "You hope that’s suspendable. Knee-on-knee. Listen, there’s no other way of looking at it. You hope it’s suspendible. But the referees made the right call. Five-minute major and a game misconduct and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
Connor currently sits two goals back of league leader Nikita Kucherov in terms of the most goals scored. He leads the Jets in points (28) and ranks within the top-10 league-wide in shots on goal.
The Jets next take on the Sharks in San Jose on Tuesday, before travelling to Los Angeles for a tilt with the Kings on Wednesday. Both games can be viewed live on TSN.
