If general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Winnipeg Jets' entire offseason plans were to re-sign pending restricted free agents, their work would be done.
After having sat almost entirely dormant through the offseason thus far, Chevy and Co. have been able to pull the strings on four RFA forwards in need of renewals on their expired contracts. Despite being unable to lure in any big name UFA acquisitions once again, the Jets did get a one-year qualifying offer in for Pierre-Luc Dubois, while signing depth forwards Jansen Harkins and Mason Appleton to multi-year deals.
One should also not forget about the key offseason additions of forward Kevin Stenlund and goaltender David Rittich. The housekeeping slew of AHL signings that followed the opening day of free agency could likely also get a mention.
If Cheveldayoff stands pat for the remainder of the offseason, he would have enough players to lace a team, sure.
He may have to convert three or four defencemen to forwards, or just hope for significant injuries to a number of players from his blueline's top-four in order to allow his young, blossoming defenders to even get a shot at playing a single game this year.
On Wednesday, he locked up his final RFA of the summer, David Gustafsson, on a two-year pact that will see the 22-year-old make $775K per season if playing at the NHL level. He would require Waivers to pass down to the AHL, so the likelihood of the young Swede remaining with the Jets does appear rather high.
Battling some seriously bad luck and lineup competition last season limited his ice time significantly with Winnipeg. He actually only skated in two games, totalling 4:56 of ice time for the Jets in 2022-23, while leaving both contests injured.
Gustafsson did, however, suit up in 47 games with Manitoba, where he scored 15 times and added another 15 assists and 10 penalty minutes, also in limited action with the Moose. The team's 2018 second rounder will most definitely get a shot at cracking the club out of training camp.
Right now, the Jets' depth chart appears as so:
Connor - Dubois - Perfetti
Wheeler - Scheifele - Ehlers
Appleton - Lowry - Barron
Harkins - Gustafsson - Toninato/Reichel
Morrissey - Pionk
Dillon - Samberg
Schmidt - DeMelo
Heinola - Stanley
Hellebuyck
Rittich
