The Winnipeg Jets have made a roster move, placing rookie forward Cole Perfetti on the team's injured reserve with an upper-body injury, while calling up recent AHL demotee Axel Jonsson-Fjallby from the Manitoba Moose to take his place.
Having hurt himself at some point on Sunday against New Jersey, the 21-year-old will miss a bit more time as he continues to recover from whatever it is that seems to be ailing him. Most will remember Perfetti's 2021-22 season as one filled with injury - something he will hope to avoid going forward. The indication that his placement is simply on the team's 'injured reserve' and not the 'long-term injured reserve' is good news for both the team and the player.
On the year, Perfetti has eight goals, 30 points and a +10 rating in 51 games for the Jets, following up his injury-plagued debut campaign that saw him post two goals and seven points in just 18 games in Winnipeg. Of his eight goals this season, one has come on the power play, while he has also added four power play assists to go alongside his 90 total shots on the year.
Winnipeg used a bottom-six on Monday that included Sam Gagner, Saku Maenalanen, Adam Lowry, Karson Kuhlman, Kevin Stenlund and Morgan Barron. Where exactly Axel Jonsson-Fjallby fits in the rotation will be up to head coach Rick Bowness to determine.
The call-up does not actually guarantee AJF a spot in the lineup, as the team seemed to manage just fine without Perfetti in its 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers on the road on Monday. The lack of shots and scoring chances was slightly concerning, and Jonsson-Fjallby's flair may come into the equation.
Having scored four goals and 11 points in 45 games for the Jets this year, Jonsson-Fjallby managed to make good on his AHL assignment, notching three goals and four points in the four games he played with the Moose.
Winnipeg takes on the New York Islanders from UBS Arena at 6:00 PM central time on Wednesday. The game can be viewed live on Sportsnet.
