When Mark Scheifele tied the game with just 32 seconds remaining, the Winnipeg Jets appeared to have all the momentum heading into overtime.
But a shift that was much too long by Blake Wheeler combined with a mistake in the Jets end, left Jason Robertson all alone in front of Connor Hellebuyck and at 3:10 of overtime, the Dallas Stars stole a 4-3 home victory away from the Jets.
Although they got a point and "improved" to 19-17-8 on the season, this was a game the Jets should have won. They had two wonderful scoring chances in the overtime, long before Robertson scored the winner, but couldn't beat Dallas netminder Jake Oettinger.
The Jets are now 8-9-7 o n the road this season as they started off a run of five games in seven nights with a 4-3 OT loss. On the bight ice, the Jets have picked up at least a point in 10 of their past 14 road games going 6-4-4.
After a scoreless first period, the Jets opened the scoring at the 50-second mark of the second period when Pierre-Luc Dubois tipped home a shot from Nate Schmidt for his 19th goal of the season. Brenden Dillon also drew an assist.
But Dallas answered at 10:48 as Jacob Peterson beat Hellebuyck and then 56 seconds later, Tyler Seguin scored his 15th of the season.
However, at 16:21, the Jets got a huge goal from Jansen Harkins, who ripped home a shot after taking a great pass from Cole Perfetti. Scheifele also drew as assist, his 20th of the season.
Then the officials entered the show. Dreadful all night, blind mice Corey Syvret and Kelly Sutherland, both missed an obvious holding the stick by Seguin and instead called a hooking penalty on Scheifele. It was a brutal call at 10:37 of the third and although the Stars didn't score on the power play, they did go ahead 3-2 just 10 seconds after Scheifele left the penalty box.
Jamie Benn got credit for the goal as he tipped a shot from Denis Gurianov that dribbled weakly between Hellebuyck's legs.
Despite that setback, the Jets kept pressing and with Hellebuyck on the bench for a sixth attacker, Scheifele drilled a shit from 35-feet that went under the bar and tied the game at three with just 32 seconds left. Neal Pionk and Kyle Connor drew the assists.
In overtime, the Jets were terrific, but they couldn't beat Oettinger and one sloppy defensive miscue cost them the game.
Dallas Outshot Winnipeg 35-34 and outhit them 17-16, although the Jets -- especially Dillon -- threw the hardest hits of the night. the Jets went zero-for-one on the power play while Dallas was zero-for-four in another example of how obviously one-sided NHL officiating can be when its at its worst. And on Friday night in Dallas, it was at its worst. In overtime, for instance, they watched like moles as Dallas had four players on the ice for almost five seconds.
Scheifele had the best Jets line of the night with a goal and an assist in 21 minutes and 46 seconds of ice time. He was also a minus-one (as he stepped on the ice after serving a penalty) with two shots while winning 57 per cent of his faceoffs.
It also should be noted that Harkins played a heck of a game for the Jets despite getting only 11 minutes and 26 seconds of ice time. He had a goal, was plus-one and had two shots and a hit. He just might have been the Jets most consistent player all night.
Winnipeg does not get to rest. They flew to Nashville immediately following the game and will take on the Predators at 6 p.m. Saturday.
