Another day, another injury for Winnipeg Jets 2021 first round pick Chaz Lucius. The young forward selected 18th overall just two drafts ago has had another setback. And once again, it is injury related.
According to both the Jets and the Western Hockey League's Portland Winterhawks, the 19-year-old Lucius will miss the remainder of the season as he underwent shoulder surgery on Monday.
After beginning the season in Manitoba - to which he put up two goals and five points in 12 games - Lucius suffered an injury in December prior to the World Juniors. He managed to return in time for the annual tournament, to which he scored the bronze medal game overtime winner for the United States in a hat trick performance.
Following that time away from the Moose, the Jets opted to send to the WHL for some development. Unfortunately for both teams and the player, he hurt himself again, despite playing at an incredible level. He had an eye-popping 15 points in just six junior games, but will now sit out and heal up in time for a productive summer of training ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Having already had both his knee and ankle operated on over the past two seasons, Lucius also missed time last year with a hand injury that did not require him to go under the knife. But the overall trend of constant injury is not a pleasant look for one of Winnipeg's most promising prospects.
Built like a beanpole, Lucius will need to add some muscle to his rather lanky frame in order to toughen up for what will be an important 20-year-old season - wherever it is that the Jets choose to place him. With Junior clearly too easy for him, more minor league play may be in the cards, as long as he can pack on a few pounds in advance of Jets training camp in September.
For now, it will be a steady diet of protein shakes and high intensity interval training.
