Winnipeg's connor hellebuyck earns prestigious award
The Winnipeg Jets - in conjunction with the National Hockey League - announced that starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has been named the league's Third Star of the Month for the month of December.
Leading the league with a 7-0-2 record last month, the 30-year-old backstop had a sub-2.0 goals against average (1.88) on the month, while racking up a .934 save percentage over his nine games played.
Winnipeg went 10-1-2 through December, with fellow netminder Laurent Brossoit filling in on the other games to which Hellebuyck was didn't suit up.
The three-time Vezina Trophy finalist and 2020 award winner currently owns 18 wins on the year (second place) and has a 2.34 goals against average and a .919 save percentage over his 27 starts so far this season. He's fifth in both shots against and saves made, while sitting first in expected goals saved above average.
As a team, Winnipeg has not given up more than three goals since November 2 - a span of 26-straight games.
Hellebuyck, 30, has never before been selected as one of the NHL's Three Stars of the Month, and is just the second player to earn such a recognition since the Jets moved back to Manitoba from Atlanta in 2011.
He kept the good times rolling on Tuesday night, as he and the Jets held the Tampa Bay Lightning to just two goals in Winnipeg's 4-2 home win from Canada Life Centre against the always dominant Andrei Vasilevskiy, who suited up in net for the Bolts.
