The Winnipeg Jets open training camp Thursday morning from Bell MTS Iceplex on the outskirts of town. With 50 players set to report, the club has changed its normal practice of keeping veterans separate from its prospects, and has opted to create two evenly-divided teams for the coming week.
In showing a tip of the hat to two former Jets 1.0 stars, True North Sports + Entertainment will see players that will make up the Manitoba Moose and Winnipeg Jets rosters this season compete in training camp on one of two teams: Team Hawerchuk, or Team Steen.
Beginning Thursday and running two weeks through October 7, the Jets' new coaching staff - consisting of bench boss Rick Bowness and company - will aim to teach the players the club's new systems and style of play as it begins weeding out the competition for roster spots on both the NHL and AHL level clubs.
The Iceplex will see six goaltenders, 16 defencemen and 28 forwards in attendance, divided up evenly between the two teams.
