True North Sports + Entertainment in conjunction with the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club has unveiled its plan to honour the late Dale Hawerchuk within Manitoba's capital city.
In a press conference held from True North Square on Friday morning, team Executive Chairman and Governor Mark Chapman announced a number of initiatives that will take place in the coming year to honour the Winnipeg Jets heritage and No. 10.
First, the Jets and Manitoba Public Insurance have come to an agreement on Winnipeg Jets Heritage License Plates. In support of the True North Youth Foundation, the club is releasing white Winnipeg Jets Heritage-styled license plates for sale through autopsic and MPI beginning on September 13. $30 from every plate purchase goes towards TNYF.
Winnipeg will also switch over from its light blue aviator third sweaters to the dark blue heritage styled uniforms for 2021-22. These will serve as the team's third jerseys, to which the club will wear 14 times at home this coming year.

In terms of Dale Hawerchuk and his lasting legacy, Chipman announced that True North has commissioned an artist to erect a statue of Hawerchuk that will be put in place in True North Square next year. Speaking 40 years to the day since the greatest Jet signed his first contract on the corner of Portage and Main, the statue will be unveiled on August 13, 2022.

In addition, True North has submitted a proposal to the City of Winnipeg to have the stretch of roadway that is Graham Ave. between Donald and Carlton renamed as the Honourary Dale Hawerchuk Way. If approved, this will be put in place by the time of the 2021-22 home opener on October 21.
“Dale, quite simply, is part of the fabric of this city and of the Winnipeg Jets organization," Chipman said. "Beyond that, he has contributed so much to the sport of hockey. We are so proud to give Dale these much-deserved honours to showcase his extraordinary career and the remarkable person he was, and ensure his legacy lives well beyond the fans who followed his career and who were lucky enough to see him play.”
In January of 2022, True North will also be hosting the first annual Ducky Pond Hockey Classic at Camp Manitou. It will be a hockey tournament held from January 13-16 under the World Pond Hockey Classic tag. The winner will move on to the Canadian tournament in New Brunswick.
“Dale has always been proud to be a part of the community in Winnipeg and felt very much at home in Manitoba," Dale's son Eric said. "It meant so much to him during his battle with cancer to see all the love and support from his fans. The Ducky Pond Hockey Classic is a perfect way to remember Dale. Some of our most cherished memories with him are playing pond hockey on Lake Winnipeg during the holidays with friends and family. There is something truly special about being on skates outside in Canada. This is going to be such a fun week and we are thrilled to be a part of it."
