Winnipeg Jets add Tyler Toffoli via Trade
The Winnipeg Jets are all-in.
On Friday morning, general manger Kevin Cheveldayoff made it clear that his club wants a shot at the Stanley Cup.
After already adding veteran forward Sean Monahan just over a month ago, Cheveldayoff picked up the phone again and turned back to another Ontario Hockey League stud.
This time, it was sniper Tyler Toffoli to whom he acquired. The 31-year-old forward - who played junior with Monahan, and against Mark Scheifele - has already won a Stanley Cup, and knows the rigours of making it to the final dance.
With the Monahan addition already proving to be an excellent piece of business, Cheveldayoff added to his masterclass 2023-24 season by bringing in a veteran point producer without having to give up the farm - or even Winnipeg's top remaining draft pick in the process.
The Jets dealt a 2025 second round pick, as well as a 2024 third rounder to New Jersey for the short-term services of Toffoli - who has just months remaining on his four-year deal featuring a $4.25 million cap hit. General manager Tom Fitzgerald and the Devils actually retained 50 percent of Toffoli's contract, giving Winnipeg over $3.5 million left to spend on another possible trade prior to the 2:00 PM central deadline.
