Late Wednesday evening, the agency for former NHL defenceman Bryan Marchment announced the sudden passing of the 53-year-old.
The news came from Montreal as teams were holding media availability in advance of the 2022 NHL Draft set for Thursday and Friday at the Bell Centre.
World spread throughout the venue like wildfire, with speculation of Marchment's passing due to the onset of a sudden heart or brain issue.
In Montreal for the draft, Marchment had been serving with the San Jose Sharks in player development as a scout over the past 15 years.
"The San Jose Sharks are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of longtime scout and NHL veteran Bryan Marchment," the Sharks wrote in a statement moments after his death. "Bryan's lifelong love of hockey was unparalleled, and he was amongst the most dedicated, physical, and fiercest plavers to ever play the game. He spent more than 20 seasons with the Sharks organization: 334 games as a player and 15 as a member of the Sharks scouting department. Most importantly. Bryan was a loving son, husband, and father. Our deepest condolences go out to his parents, his wife Kim and son Mason and daughter Logan."
Marchment played 926 games over the course of his lengthy career, beginning in 1989 with the Winnipeg Jets, before moving through the Chicago Blackhawks, Hartford Whalers, Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and the Sharks.
"It’s a sad day for me personally and a very sad day for a lot of people in our organization," said new Sharks GM Mike Grier. "Anyone who knew Bryan knew the type of man he was. He was an honest, down-to-earth, loving person. He cared about everyone. He had time for everyone he came across in the building. For me personally, he was great to me in my first few years in Edmonton. Treated me with respect right away. Made me feel right at home. If I ever needed anything, even if it was a home-cooked dinner instead of eating out every day, he and Kim would have me over. It is a very difficult day.”
Known for his physical play, Marchment put up over 2,000 penalty minutes in his career, once registering 313 total minutes in a single season. He was suspended 13 times over his first 12 seasons and had a reputation as a heavy, heavy hitter. Marchment was selected 16th overall by Winnipeg in the 1987 NHL Draft.
He was 53.
