Dylan Mcilrath to sit following two-game ban
Hershey Bears defenceman Dylan McIlrath has been suspended by the American Hockey League and will sit for two games.
The 31-year-old Winnipeg product was booted from the Monday night contest between the visiting Bears and Belleville Senators midway through the third period.
McIlrath, a 600-game AHL veteran, was given a five-minute major for fighting as well as an aggressor game misconduct after he dropped Brennan Saulnier in the open ice with one punch following a questionable check on teammate Joe Snively. Whether or not Saulnier wanted to fight, McIlrath was not interested in waiting around. The Bears captain ripped his gloves off and sent Saulnier right to the ice - seemingly unconscious - with a quick shot to the head.
Saulnier is not typically one to back down from a tilt, so his unwillingness may have also just been an inability to get his gloves off and defend himself in time following McIlrath's instigation. The two had actually previously thrown hands in 2021.
The AHL reviewed the play and deemed a two-game ban a necessary response to McIlrath's decision.
The two-time Calder Cup champion will now miss Wednesday's game against Laval in Quebec, as well as Friday's tilt with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at home.
On the season, McIlrath has skated in 41 games, putting up three goals, eight points and 71 penalty minutes. He spent time with the Washington Capitals, suiting up in one game, to which he dropped the mitts with fellow Winnipegger Keegan Kolesar of the Vegas Golden Knights.
