WHL Names Dimitri fortin as its rookie of the week
The Western Hockey League has announced Moose Jaw Warriors netminder as its Rookie of the Week for his work over the last seven days.
The 17-year-old Winnipeg product made two appearances for the Warriors, going 2-0-0 with a sparkling .938 save percentage and a 1.70 goals against average.
He actually came in in relief of Jackson Unger for his first game of the week, after Moose Jaw fell behind 3-0 to the league-leading Saskatoon Blades in the first period. He turned aside all 24 pucks he faced and helped his club rally for six unanswered goals for a 6-3 come-from-behind home win.
Fortin then was handed starting duties the following day against fellow provincial rival, Regina. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound backstop continued his dominance, turning aside 21 of 24 shots for another 6-3 victory, improving his numbers to 45 saves on 48 shots faced over a five-period, 24-hour span.
The former Winnipeg Bruins AAA star currently owns a 6-3-1 record, as well as a 3.19 goals against average and a .903 save percentage in his first season of WHL play. Selected 204th overall in the 10th round of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, Fortin concluded his U18 AAA career as the league's Goaltender of the Year in 2022-23.
Moose Jaw is now sitting at 43-20-0-3 and has locked up third place in the Eastern Conference. The Warriors have two games left on the schedule, including a Thursday night affair with the Brandon Wheat Kings at 7:00 PM central time.
