Winnipeg Ice win 2023-24 league championship
On Sunday evening, the Winnipeg Ice of the Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League took home their second-straight league championship, dusting the Westman Wildcats in three-straight games, completing the sweep with a narrow 2-1 victory at home.
The game was played at the Hockey For All Centre - the home of the Winnipeg Ice - situated just outside of Winnipeg's west Perimeter Highway, much like that of Game 1.
Halle Chabluk and Aliyah Teixeira scored for Winnipeg, which improved to 9-0 in the postseason, concluding the year with three-straight playoff sweeps.
Winnipeg netminder Laura Melizza turned aside 29 of the 30 shots she faced on the night, while Westman's Danica Averill had 34 stops on the 36 pucks fired her way by the Ice.

Outgoing team captain Stephanie Jacob had nine goals and 14 points in the nine-game postseason for provincial champion Winnipeg, including three goals and five points in the championship series, including two game-winners. She will be suiting up for the NCAA's University of Maine Black Bears next season.
The Ice first took care of business against the Central Plains Capitals, outscoring the Portage la Prairie folk 10-0 in the series, before moving on to face the Yellowhead Chiefs in early-March.
That second round matchup featured two 4-3 Ice victories, before Winnipeg shut out the Chiefs 4-0 in the decisive Game 3, sending the team to their second-straight championship.
The Ice will now await the winner of Regina/Notre Dame in the Saskatchewan Female U-18 Hockey League finals, before hosting that club from Hockey For All Centre from April 4-7 in the Esso Cup West Regional Finals. That series will feature a best-of-three format as well as a nine-member, all-female officiating crew. The winner will move on to play in the Esso Cup against four other regional champions and the host club, Thompson-Okanagan Lakers from Vernon, B.C. on April 21-27.
