Wheat Kings maintain dominance with league championship sweep
The Manitoba U18 Brandon Wheat Kings took care of business against the Winnipeg Wild, by way of a 3-0 series sweep on Tuesday night.
Finishing off Winnipeg's top team, Brandon moved to 52-0-1 on the year, finishing what was an absolutely dominant run of 53-straight games with a point (107 points). The Wheat Kings - by most accounts - will be the team to beat in the Telus Cup.
Yes, they will still need to win the West Regionals - to which they earned their spot with the provincial league championship this past week - but that part likely doesn't pose much of an issue for a team that has won 40-straight games.
The Wheat Kings care of the Wild 5-2 in Game 1, before doubling down for a 4-1 victory in the second contest. Game 3 was significantly closer in nature, but the powerhouse finished things off with a 4-3 overtime win to end the series. Brandon outshot Winnipeg 45-25 in the game and 114-73 in the series.
Wheat Kings' star forward Jaxon Jacobson continued his torrid stretch, putting up 12 goals and 23 points in just nine postseason games, adding to his outstanding totals from the regular season, which saw him collect 37 goals and 106 points in 35 games.
Both Brandon and Winnipeg will be moving on to the West Regionals, despite the series sweep, as the Wild are set to play as the host team against clubs from Saskatchewan and Northern Ontario from the Hockey For All Centre beginning next week. Games begin on Thursday, April 4 and run through the 7th, much like that of the female host U18 AAA Winnipeg Ice, which will take on the best of Saskatchewan in its own series.
