The 23 players selected to represent Canada at the 2022 IIHF Women's World Championship in late-August have been named publicly by Hockey Canada.
Included within the list of three goaltenders, seven defenders and 13 forwards who will suit up for Canada are three Manitobans who will represent their province, nationally, on the international stage in Herning and Frederikshavn, Denmark.
Jocelyne Larocque (Ste. Anne) and Ashton Bell (Deloraine) will return to the lineup on defence, while Kristen Campbell (Brandon) will be one of three goaltenders set to man the crease.
Selected following a near two week selection camp previously held in Calgary, the players making up the Canadian team will suit up in the 11-day, Women's World Championship event, which will be the first time that Canada can look to repeat as champions since the 2000 and 2001 runnings of the spectacle.
Of the 23 players chosen, just one will be making her debut at the World Championship, while 19 served as members of the 2021 team. 18 were members of the team that won gold at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Both Victoria Bach and Meaghan Mikkelson return to the lineup after missing out on the last event.
“It is unusual to play in a world championship and an Olympics in a single year, but this opportunity allows us to evaluate ourselves against the best in the world as we start our new four-year Olympic cycle,” said Gina Kingsbury, director of operations. “We are fortunate to have familiarity among our coaching staff and players who know what it takes to win. We had an extremely competitive camp and we believe we have assembled an experienced team that will give us the best chance to compete once again for a gold medal.”
Canada will play out of Group A, alongside Finland, Japan, Switzerland and the United States, while Group B will see Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Hungary and Sweden also involved. The Canadians will face off against Finland on August. 25, before taking on Switzerland on August 27 and Japan on August 28. The final game of the preliminary round will be against arch-rival USA on August 30. Pre-tournament action will feature games against Denmark (August 20) and USA (August 23). All of Canada's games will be aired live on TSN.
