Over the past year, the group of Canada's best hockey-playing females have won both the Beijing Olympic Winter Games gold medal over Team USA, as well as Women's World Championship gold, also against the United States.
So why not make it three and take the U-18 Women's World Championship as well?
Although the roster was comprised of different names and faces from a much younger demographic, the girls in red and white took to the ice in Madison, Wisconsin for the gold medal game and skated off as victors, once again bringing about that sense of Canadian pride put on display so very often this 2021-22 season.

Scoring for Canada in the U-18 championship final was Alexia Aubin, Ava Murphy and Jocelyn Amos, who helped their countrymates hold off a strong U.S. attack that put up two goals in a seven-second span very late in the second period.
Despite the strong push-back and their heavy shot lead, the Americans were unable to beat Canadian netminder Mari Pietersen, and outshot Canada 31-21, but ended up falling 3-2 in yet another tight championship game.
Having lost to the Americans back in 2020 in the tournament's final running prior to COVID, Canada got its revenge on USA for that championship loss, as well as the 7-0 drubbing the Americans put on the Canadians back in this year's preliminary round matchup. Although originally set to run in January in Sweden, the tournament was bumped back to June in USA thanks to the heavy third and fourth waves of COVID within the hockey world at that time.

This was the 13th gold-medal meeting in 14 tournaments between Canada and the Americans. The lone exception was 2018, when the U.S. trounced upstart Sweden 9-3.
The U.S.’s U18 Women’s Worlds record in gold medal games against Canada fell to seven wins and six losses. Seven of the previous head-to-head finals went to overtime, with the U.S. winning four times and losing three times.
In terms of the overall Canada-U.S. rivalry in women’s hockey, this outcome will only add fuel to the fire. The Canadians recently regained their titles as Women’s Worlds (2021) and Olympic (2022) champions after droughts that dated back to 2012 and 2014 respectively.
The next IIHF senior women's tournament is the 2022 Women’s Worlds in Denmark (26 August to 4 September, Herning and Frederikshavn). It's the first time the Women’s Worlds have ever taken place in an Olympic year. Fans are looking forward to seeing which U18 Women’s Worlds stars could make their senior debut there.
The 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship has been allocated to Sweden. It will take place in Ostersund and Brunflo from 8 to 15 January.
