Kolten Shindle was the hero for Portage, scoring his fourth of the playoffs and first of the series to send the series back to the Battlefords tied at one game apiece.
Game 2 played out eerily similar to Game 1 on Friday night which saw the Terriers jump out to a 2-0 lead before watching it slip away as the Battlefords scored three unanswered en route to a 3-2 win. Only this time, the Terriers liked the outcome a lot better.
Just as Jared Roy did for the Terriers the night before, Scott Mickoski scored twice in the opening frame, helping Portage jump out to a 2-0 lead after the first. Battlefords began the second period on the power play where Owen Lamb answered for the North Stars, cutting the lead in half. Midway through the period Austin Becker lit the lamp with his first of the series to send the clubs to their respective dressing rooms tied at two after two.
Just as they did in Game 1, the Battlefords took a 3-2 lead in the third period with Noah Form notching his first of the series. With time running out and it looking like the Terriers were going to be on the wrong side of a 3-2 score for the second straight night, they were awarded a late power play. Once again, the close to 1,200 faithful in attendance at Stride Place were treated to yet another dramatic finish, when Orca Weisblatt fired home his first of the series to notch things up at three with 45 seconds left, setting the stage for Shindle’s overtime heroics.
Both goaltenders were fantastic on Saturday night, with Terriers Ethan Peterson knocking aside 27-of-30 shots, while Battlefords Joel Grzybowski made 37 saves in the loss.
The two clubs will now head west to Saskatchewan for games three, four and five, with Game 3 set to go on Tuesday night at the Battlefords.
