The Ottawa Senators will have a new arena to play in, but it's going to take a while. At long last, the team has reached a memorandum of understanding with the National Capital Commission, and a group of investment partners, allowing them to build an arena at the downtown site of LeBreton Flats.
The club has been awarded the land and has since put together some renderings of the proposed arena and large-scale event venue.
This means that the group led by the Senators is the preferred bidder and leading the race to build the new arena.
"Today's announcement marks a significant move towards our long-term vision, a downtown arena at LeBreton Flats," said Senators' president of business operations, Anthony LeBlanc. "We believe that this development will have a major impact on both the Nation Capital Region and our franchise, one that will help to shape the future of the city. We thank the NCC for their collaboration and look forward to working alongside them as we take the next steps on this exciting journey."
LeBreton Flats formerly served as a heavily populated neighbourhood just west of Parliament Hill, but the federal government took it away from the people, tearing it down to what it is today: a 29-hectare site awaiting development plans.
Ottawa has played at the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata - some 30 kilometres southwest of LeBreton Flats - for the past 26 years.
