Yesterday was fun embracing the chaos of the NHL Draft Lottery. A qualifying round team is going to win the NHL Draft Lottery and pick first overall, but we don’t know who that’s going to be yet. This is crazy and fun and chaotic.
As you may have noticed, I did not write about the play-in teams yesterday. Well here is Part II of this series.
Let’s dive in…
Pittsburgh Penguins (40-23-6) – You have Sidney Crosby who can lead you to a Stanley Cup… again. And you have a chance of pairing him with Alexis Lafreniere. You should be feeling content.
Montreal Canadiens (31-31-9) – Heading into the playoffs I will always take the best goalie. Let’s just not look at this year’s stats for Carey Price. Lafreniere would feel right at home in Montreal. I would feel confident heading into the draft.
Carolina Hurricanes (38-25-5) – I think Carolina can take the New York Rangers, but I’d rather see them 'Storm Surge' after getting the first overall pick. I would feel imaginative and start planning that Surge.
New York Rangers (37-28-5) – The New Jersey Devils mocked the Rangers with a social distancing reference. I think the distance from picking first to picking seventh will be enough distance. Feel that karma in your favour.
New York Islanders (35-23-10) – Do the Islanders have a home yet? Are they in Brooklyn? The Island? It’s tough to keep up. I don’t want Lafreniere going through that just to pull a John Tavares. I would still feel resentment towards Tavares and the Leafs.
Florida Panthers (35-26-8) – Playing without crowds is a massive advantage for the Panthers. They’ve done it for years. Maybe this is what it takes to bring Lord Stanley home. As a fan I’d feel alone because there aren’t many out there apparently.
Toronto Maple Leafs (36-25-9) – If 2020 truly has it’s way, the Leafs will win the Cup this year because then everyone can put an asterisk beside it and the drought jokes will continue. It would almost be a curse to win the Cup, but no one can take that first pick from you. I would feel absolutely torn between winning and losing.
Columbus Blue Jackets (33-22-15) – Everyone left you. You were not supposed to compete and here you are. Would defeating the media darling Leafs be better than defeating the first overall Lightning? I’m not sure, but I’d love to see it. I would feel optimistic because hey, you’ve done this before.
