The Manitoba Junior Women's Hockey League is set to begin its tryout season this weekend, following registration and the conclusion of its three sessions of pre-tryout skates in late-August and early-September.
The MWJHL will host three afternoon tryout icetimes at Bell MTS Iceplex on the Manitoba Building Trades ice surface this coming weekend. The first skate will be held on Saturday, September 10, while the second skate will be on Sunday. The third session will be held on Monday evening. The annual draft will go just a few days later on Thursday.
With 127 players set to participate in the on-ice sessions, eight teams have been created in advance of the tryout skates. Seven teams of 16 and one group of 15 players will wear their assigned jersey colours and be put through the wringer as scouts and coaches from each of the seven MWJHL clubs look on from the stands.
MWJHL Tryout Groups:
Following the conclusion of the first full season in three attempts, the MWJHL – or Manitoba’s very best female junior hockey league – is back in full for another year of competitive, high-level, junior hockey for young women aged 18-21 that are continuing their education and workforce careers.
With roughy one game and one practice per week – with games only scheduled on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays – those with busy work/university schedules are typically able to make the ‘light’ hockey week work. The level of competition within the MWJHL ranges from continued U-18 AA through AAA and High School level of hockey.
Touted as ‘A League with a Difference’, the MWJHL’s objective is to “promote the growth of women’s hockey in Manitoba and to foster the development of competitive hockey while setting high standards of fair play and respect as outlined in the MWJHL mission statement.”
Regarding the 2022-23 season, the yearly fee for all players has been set at $1,200. All registered players must attend tryouts in order to be eligible for the coming season – veterans included. First-year rookies are required to pay a $100 non-refundable deposit in advance of their first session, which goes towards their annual fee.
The 2022-23 season is available to females born from 2001-2004. Registration is to be completed on the MWJHL website. Tryouts are scheduled for September 11, 12 and 13 at the Iceplex. Following registration, information will be sent out via mail regarding payment/tryout times.
