McKiya Mazur has certainly proved herself on the ice.
This season, the 17-year-old from Russell, MB., played a major role in The RINK Female Varsity team’s Canadian School Sport Hockey League championship. The former star with the MFHL U18 AAA’s Yellowhead Chiefs, had 17 goals and 31 points in 41 games with the RINK this season.
She was so good in the CSSHL, that she accepted a scholarship offer from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S., and all things being equal, will start playing for the X-Women this fall. Mazur is heading to a good program: St. Francis Xavier went 22-6-0 this season.
“I’m excited about next fall, I just hope all the craziness goes away,” she said. “I’m really excited about finding this little gem (StFX).”
However, while Mazur has long been one of the better young athletes in Manitoba, she’s also been pretty special off the ice.
In fact, last month, she was named the recipient of the 2020 CSSHL Female Humanitarian of the Year award.
“It was really unexpected, honestly,” she said via phone from her home in Russell. “It’s just the things you do. My dad always taught me to help others whenever I get the chance and that’s what I’ve always tried to do. I take pride in helping others, but I never expected to be recognized for it.”
Mazur organized, coached and participated on her high school track team, and coached the Intro to Hockey program in her hometown of 1,400.
She also delivered food hampers in downtown Winnipeg during the holiday season. Despite playing hockey and given her time away from the rink, she has also maintained an 85 per cent average at Winnipeg’s Shaftesbury High School.
“The award was a surprise to me because it’s not something I brag about,” she said. “It’s just about doing little things. It’s just who I am.”
The winner of the CSSHL Humanitarian Award, both male and female, are chosen by an independent panel.
