Geekie scores twice as Canada routs Latvia 10-0
Thanks to two goals from Strathclair, Manitoba's Conor Geekie - and seven other goal scorers - the team representing Canada at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship improved to 2-0-0 through its first two games of the 2024 tournament.
Having earlier defeated Finland on Tuesday morning, Canada got back in the action in a later day affair with the Latvians on Wednesday.
The Canadians pulled ahead 2-0 through 20 minutes of play, before adding another three in the middle stanza. But it was the third period to which the rout began. Canada piled on another five markers in the third, running away with the game by a 10-0 final.
Fourteen different players had points for the Canadians, which saw goals from eight total scorers, as Carson Rehkopf also potted two for the Canadians.
Geekie's first of the game opened the scoring at 5:19 of the first period, while his second came roughly 40 minutes later, which served as Canada's eighth tally of the contest. Fellow Manitoban Denton Mateychuk also had two points in the game, as he picked up two helpers, the first coming on Geekie's first period strike.
Touted No. 1 selection at the 2024 NHL Draft Macklin Celebrini had five points for Canada.
Latvia managed 22 shots on net to Canada's 41, but Mathis Rousseau stood tall in goal.
Next up is a rare day off for the Canadians on Thursday, before the team prepares for a tough test against the host Sweden on Friday. That game can be viewed live on TSN at 12:30 PM central.
