The Stanley Cup Playoffs saw a wild opening night on Monday, with four games and eight total teams in action across the National Hockey League.
Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Jack Campbell and the Toronto Maple Leafs took care of business against the back-to-back Stanley Cup winning Tampa Bay Lightning, while Connor McDavid's Edmonton Oilers fell to the Los Angeles Kings in a playoff matchup fans have waited 30 years to see.
Youngster Seth Jarvis led the way for the Carolina Hurricanes in their 5-1 rout of the once dominant Boston Bruins, while David Perron registered a point - which including a hat trick - on all four St. Louis goals in a 4-0 shutout over the Minnesota Wild.
Ville Husso and Jack Campbell recorded shutouts for their respective teams, while offensive stars led the way up front in St. Louis and Toronto. Auston Matthews scored two goals and added an assist, while Mitch Marner sent Andrei Vasilevskiy's jockstrap to the moon with one heck of a fake shot before slaying his playoff demons with his first postseason goal since 2019.
In Edmonton, it was a brutal Mike Smith turnover that led to the Kings' game-winning goal. Even a two-point night from Connor McDavid wasn't enough to beat Jonathan Quick and his Los Angeles running mates.
With the two higher-ranked Eastern Conference seeds winning and the two lower-ranked Western Conference seeds picking up the victories on Monday, it has once again proven to be anyone's game come playoff time. Tuesday sees the remaining eight teams square off in Game 1 of their respective series.
New York hosts Pittsburgh while Florida entertains Washington in the east, before Nashville visits Colorado and Dallas pays a visit to Calgary out west in the late-night showings.
Grab your popcorn and wobbly pops, as it's going to be an exciting week.
