Laine scored a goal in every period to lead the Jets to a 3-0 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. It was the third straight multi-goal game for Laine – two, two and three. He has seven goals in his last three games, nine in his last five and 13 in his last nine. The 19-year-old became the third NHL player to notch at least four hat-tricks before the age of 20 (Dale Hawerchuk and Jimmy Carson each had five).
With 38 goals this season, Laine is second behind Washington’s Alex Ovechkin (40) in the NHL goal-scoring race.
“Things are going pretty well,” Laine told reporters after the game. “The team is winning and our line is playing pretty good hockey so I have to be satisfied with that.”
Meanwhile, Mason played his first game for the Jets since Jan. 9, and recorded his third career shutout at MSG.
"They (the Rangers) probably had three really good chances in the first period and then Laine does what he's been doing for us,” said Jets head coach Paul Maurice. “He doesn't need much time, or many opportunities. He's just a lethal shooter right now and we're trying to get him the puck as much as we can.”
Laine scored at 19:04 of the first period from Paul Stastny and Dustin Byfuglien; at 11:01 of the second period from Ben Chiarot and Joe Morrow; and then into the empty net at 19:26 of the third period from Blake Wheeler.
The Jets outshot the Rangers 34-31. The Jets won 55 percent of the faceoffs and outhit New York 20-18. The Jets Matt Hendricks and the Rangers Cody McLeod, from Binscarth, Man., had themselves a little first-period fight.
Tyler Myers led the Jets with 24 minutes and 45 seconds of icetime. Byfuglien played 23:50 and Dmitry Kulikov logged 22:46. Thanks to a first-period collision with Wheeler, the Jets Mark Scheifele played only 10 minutes and 44 seconds and his injury will be re-evaluated today.
The Rangers didn’t score on one power play opportunity while the Jets did not have a power play.
The Jets will now have a day off and then play the New Jersey Devils in Newark on Thursday at 6 p.m. on TSN3. They’ll play at noon on Saturday in Philadelphia and then face Washington (Monday, the 12th) and Nashville (Tuesday the 13th) to complete this crucial six-game road trip.
