Ever since his days skating on the outdoor rinks of Winnipeg's Tuxedo Community Centre, Seth Jarvis has always had one goal: to sign an NHL contract. On Monday morning, that dream came true as the Carolina Hurricanes - the team that drafted Jarvis 13th overall at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft this past October - announced Jarvis' entry-level contract.
“It's an incredible feeling," Jarvis told Game On. "It’s really tough to put into words, but I’ve just been lucky enough to be supported by such great people no matter where I went. Whether it be in Winnipeg where I started out when I was younger, or moving to Portland, that support has just followed me wherever I went. Now to be with such a good organization with great fans who love the team and love their players, it just proves that I’m going to be supported wherever I go, and that feels awesome.”
Officially, the 18-year-old's deal will begin in the 2020-21 season and feature an NHL maximum $925K cap hit, while his annual salary will be $833K at the NHL level, or $80K if he spends time in the American Hockey League with Carolina's farm club, the Chicago Wolves.
“I’m super excited,” Jarvis said candidly. “This is something I’ve been wanting to do especially ever since getting drafted. This is a big goal, and the fact that it finally happened, it is awesome. I’ve been lucky enough to have a great agent, who I have left it up to sort out with Carolina. They both did a great job and were able to come to an agreement where we were all happy. That’s the best, where everyone is happy; it just went through perfectly."
'Perfectly' would also be a word that fittingly describes Jarvis' 2019-20 campaign with the Winterhawks. Suiting up 58 times for Portland, the former Assiniboine Park AA Ranger scored on 42 occasions, while adding 56 assists for 98 points. He had two 10+ game point-scoring streaks, while registering points in 45 of his 58 games played. Jarvis also finished he season with 28 multi-point outings. In 130 total WHL games over the past two years, he has a combined 58 goals and 139 points. 2019-20 also saw the rule-abiding forward recognized with the WHL’s Brad Hornung Trophy as the league’s most sportsmanlike player.
Jarvis, who has been in Raleigh, NC. since Boxing Day, has been skating with fellow Manitoban Morgan Geekie on the daily, while getting himself acclimatized with the facilities, staff, other teammates and the COVID-19 testing protocol as he prepares for the January 3 opening of Hurricanes training camp.
"To be honest, I actually never really got tested until I got to the World Junior Camp," Jarvis admitted. "But after getting tested every there for like 30 days I kind of consider myself a COVID test veteran now. I’m pretty immune to all that testing now and am ready for whatever comes my way. I actually just saw Stelio Mattheos today at one of our COVID testing sites. But yeah, being tested here every day too is nothing new for me; it's just a little stick going up your nose.”
Adjusting to always wearing a mask and minding his space around others is not the only tidbit of information that the 5-foot-10, 175-pound forward has picked up in as of late. Jarvis recently travelled out to Red Deer, AB. for the Team Canada World Junior Selection Camp, but was ultimately released with the team's final cuts prior to the tournament's start date. In choosing to look back upon the experience as a learning opportunity, the 18-year-old already has his sights set on the 2022 running of he annual spectacle.
“I enjoyed my time at the camp and I think it was a great experience for me,” the RINK-trained athlete said. “Being a first year player, it was awesome to be there and be surrounded by the staff and the people involved. Obviously, it didn’t go the way I wanted, but you really can’t replicate that experience of being in a bubble and going through a bit of adversity with COVID shutting down camp. But it’s about always staying ready and I can definitely use that experience to my advantage. I can use it to light a bit of a fire in me to keep working hard and keep pushing for whatever’s next. It was a great experience and something I’d love to do again, and hopefully next year I’ll make the team.”
