The Sharks acquired Kane in an exceptionally successful trade deadline day deal with the Buffalo Sabres this past season. As Kane re-signed with San Jose, Buffalo will receive a first round pick in return for Kane. The Sabres also collected a conditional fourth rounder in 2019 and Danny O'Regan in the trade.
Kane produced mightily for the Sharks, putting up three goals and an assist in San Jose’s opening round series victory over Anaheim. His multiple injuries caught up to him in the second round, only allowing the former Sabre to produce just one goal against Vegas.
He finished the 2017-18 season with 29 goals and 54 points, only one goal and three points behind his career best. Kane was selected fourth overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009.
As many Winnipeggers will remember, Kane drew much criticism within the Jets’ organization after countless incidents – both internal and external while living in Manitoba. He was eventually dealt to Buffalo, along with Zach Bogosian and Jason Kasdorf in exchange for Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford, Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux and a 2015 first round pick (Jack Roslovic) – it’s safe to say that Kevin Cheveldayoff knew what he was doing while striking this deal.
In signing his seven-year $49 million deal, Kane draws some contract similarities to Kyle Okposo (BUF) 7 x $6M, Milan Lucic (EDM) 7 x $6M, Bobby Ryan (OTT) 7 x $7.25M, Kyle Turris (NSH) 6 x $6M, David Krejci (BOS) 6 x $7.25M. As opposed to these players listed above, Kane has yet to top 60 points in one NHL season.
