New Jersey Devils Sign Isaac Poulter to Two-Year Contract
The New Jersey Devils and goaltender Isaac Poulter have agreed to put pen to paper on a two-year, entry-level contract worth $1.625 million.
The Winnipeg product will make $70K at the American Hockey League level this season and $75K next year. If he makes the jump to the Devils, Poulter will earn $775K. Also negotiated into his deal was a $20K signing bonus this past week and another $55K bonus next season.
The 22-year-old backstop currently owns a 14-7-1 record with the Devils' affiliate club, the Utica Comets. He has a 2.70 goals against average and a .908 save percentage on the season, to go alongside three shutouts.
Last season was his first year of professional hockey, where he split time between the Comets and the ECHL's Adirondack Thunder; he had winning records for both clubs.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound goaltender got his start with the AAA Winnipeg Monarchs, before transitioning to the CSSHL's RINK for two seasons of U-18 play. He then earned a spot on the WHL's Swift Current Broncos, where he played for four seasons, before agreeing to an AHL deal with Utica.
This past week dreams became a reality with the signing of his first NHL contract and the subsequent news that he would earn his first NHL recall days later.
With New Jersey currently housing Vitek Vanecek on its injured reserve, the Devils sent Akira Schmid down to Utica and recalled Poulter to tandem with Nico Daws. Whether or not get sees any game action remains up in the air. New Jersey next faces the New York Rangers on Thursday.
