Canada begins world juniors with 5-2 win over finland
The International Ice Hockey Federation's World Junior Hockey Championship is fully underway.
With months of build-up, the annual holiday season festivity kicked off from Gothenburg, Sweden on Boxing Day, marking the start of the 11-day tournament of the best male hockey players under the age of 20 from each of the 10 countries represented.
Team Canada began its quest for World Junior gold with a 5-2 victory over Finland early Tuesday morning.
With Gothenburg being seven hours ahead of Canada's central time, fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the action will need to do so in the earlier stages of the day.
Brandon Wheat Kings forward Nate Danielson stole the show in the opening game, scoring once, adding an assist and taking four shots on net to earn Canada's most valuable player of the game award, while Dominion City product Denton Mateychuk and Strathclair's Conor Geekie each picked up a helper in the win.
"We stuck to our game, and when we do that, there are not a lot of teams that can play with us," Danielson said post-game. "We get pucks to the net, use our cycle game really well. We expected them to be a little physical, but we did a good job of giving it back."
Canada stormed out to a quick 2-0 lead before the Finns cut the deficit in half midway through the middle stanza. Canada restored its two-goal lead off the stick of youngster Macklin Celebrini, before Boston Bruins forward Matthew Poitras got an insurance marker with just minutes left in the third.
Finland did score once again, only to have Canada finish things off with an empty net strike in the game's dying seconds.
Coming off World Junior gold just one year ago, Canada will look to keep the good times rolling on Wednesday, when they take on Latvia in the late game, which features a 12:30 PM central time start. Every game of the 11-day tournament can be viewed live on TSN.
