Joel Edmundson is Toronto-bound
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a splash roughly 24 hours prior to the NHL's trade deadline, as they have acquired defenceman Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals.
The rugged, shut-down defenceman will join the Maple Leafs for the stretch run and into the postseason, as Toronto hopes to finally find its way to the Stanley Cup final.
Edmundson, who won the Cup with the St. Louis Blues back in 2019, knows a thing or two about winning - just not in recent years.
After winning with St. Louis, the now 30-year-old joined the Carolina Hurricanes for one season, before becoming a mainstay with the Montreal Canadiens, where he served for three years. He was in the final year of his contract when the Habs dealt him to Washington this summer. He has just months left on that four-year, $14 million deal.
Heading back to the Capitals from Toronto is a 2024 third-round draft pick and 2025 fifth-round selection. Washington will also retain 50 percent of Edmundson's salary, meaning the Leafs are off the books for a good chunk of his pay. He will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
On the season, the 6-foot-5 Brandon product has a goal and six points in 44 outings. His heavy presence on the back-end will certainly be welcomed in Ontario.
