Red white and gold for Jets' McGroarty at 2024 World Juniors
Team USA is golden following the conclusion of the championship game of the 2024 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.
Held in Gothenburg, Sweden, the United States upset the host country, rallying for three third period tallies, beating Sweden 6-2 in the final game and taking home the gold medal on Friday afternoon.
Team captain and Winnipeg Jets prospect Rutger McGroarty was the first player to touch the championship trophy, as he and his USA teammates celebrated a much-deserved gold medal well into the evening.
McGroarty's Americans defeated fellow Jets prospects Elias Salomonsson and Fabian Wagner, who took home the silver medal as runners up to the mighty red, white and blue.
"I'm so proud of this group," McGroarty said following the celebration. "We're world champs. How much better does it get?"
USA held a 3-2 lead through two periods of play and pounded another three pucks into the net in the third period, sealing the deal on a victory over a Swedish team that has now not won a gold medal since the 2012 rendition of the event.
"I don't know if I'm ever going to wear the USA Hockey jersey again," the 19-year-old McGroarty added. "At least we're going out on top."
McGroarty finished the game with one goal and a massive check, quite possibly the hit of the tournament, as he concluded his world junior eligibility with a piece of gold and memories to last a lifetime.
