Manness sisters, McDonald earn invites to women's u18 camp
Manitoba’s Hayley McDonald (East St. Paul), Sara Manness (La Salle), and Kate Manness (La Salle) were invited to Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp, which is now underway from Thorold, Ontario.
Sara Manness, the youngest member of Team Canada at the 2024 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship, spent last season with the Burlington Jr. Barracudas of the OWHA U22 Elite League. She finished as one of three players with 100-point seasons—doing so in just 39 games. Manness represented Manitoba at the 2023 Women’s U18 National Championship, earning tournament MVP honours after tallying five goals and nine points in five games.
Kate Manness - Sara’s twin sister - also played for the Jr Barracudas in the OWHA U22 Elite League as a 16-year-old, tallying six goals and 36 points in 31 games last season. The 2007-born, right-handed defender also played for Manitoba at the 2023 Women’s U18 National Championship, posting two assists in five games. Both Manness sisters are committed to the NCAA’s Clarkson University for the 2025-26 season.
McDonald, of East St. Paul, spent last season with the Balmoral Hall Blazers of the Junior Women’s Hockey League. The 17-year-old forward won the JWHL scoring race scoring 23 goals in 22 games and finished with 34 total points. McDonald was the only 2008-born female in Manitoba to play Bantam Boys U15 AAA in 2021-22. She joined both Manness sisters at the 2023 Women’s U18 National Championship, finishing with three points in five games.
Among the 46 players invited to camp, the Canadian women return only five names from the 2024 bronze medal-winning roster—three forwards, one defender, and one goaltender. Providing the five returnees make the cut, there will be sixteen openings for Canadian skaters on the roster.
Wednesday marks the first of three Red and White games from August 7-10. Once finalized, Team Canada will meet its archrivals Team USA in a three-game showdown at Canada Games Park from Aug. 14-17.
