Morgan Geekie goes down to the hockey tonk
Music City may want to keep an eye on the east coast and Manitoban Morgan Geekie.
Last week, Geekie, 26-year-old Boston Bruins forward, appeared on “Hockey Tonk” with Cole Bradley—a show that connects NHL players to musicians in Nashville.
During his interview, Geekie discussed his passion for music and what it means to him.
”I think it tells a story, and it can fit a lot of emotions any time of the day,” Geekie said. "Whether you just wake up or it’s late at night getting ready for a game.”
Geekie spoke about the role music played growing up in his Strathclair, Manitoba home.
“For me, I grew up with music. My parents and my brothers, we all have had it kind of in our life, engrained in us since we were super young,” said Geekie. “It’s something super special.”
Geekie says his mom put him into guitar lessons when he was 10 or 11, but said it wasn’t considered “cool” to play guitar as a kid. At the beginning of his professional career with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL, Geekie reconnected with his passion for the guitar.
During the episode, Geekie collaborated with singer-songwriter Matt Roy—a Bruins fan who has written hits for Morgan Wallen, Kane Brown, Brett Young, Chris Janson and more.
After some creative back-and-forth, the tandem of Geekie and Roy produce “Back Home”, a song inspired by Geekie’s perspective on the fast-travelling lifestyle of an NHL player and the love he has for his family.
After writing his debut track, can Manitobans expect Geekie to further pursue his passion for music?
“I’m a little more comfortable on the ice, but they’re both lots of fun and I can’t thank (Bradley) enough for having me share the stage with (Roy).”
Bradley’s “Hockey Tonk” began airing on the NHL Network and Sportsnet earlier this season. The show premiered in March when Bradley hosted Stanley Cup Champion Steven Lorentz of Florida.
