The Capital Region Junior Hockey League will have a new team for the upcoming 2022-23 hockey season.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the CRJHL is expanding to Beausejour in time for the fall.
Although currently without a team name, colour scheme, coach and general manager, the league's newest franchise was approved by the league board and will join the already well-established Selkirk Fishermen, St. Malo Warriors, North Winnipeg Satelites, Arborg Ice Dawgs and Lundar Falcons in action next season.
“The CRJHL is pleased to be in a position to expand to six teams for the 2022-23 season,” league president Cliff Malzensky said. “This is something we have been looking forward to for a few seasons now.”
An additional team will make the task of scheduling slightly more complex, but likely more thorough as added competition will bring about further travel and a new opponent/venue for the league. Splitting the six teams in half based on geographical divisions may also be a consideration as the offseason continues.
Despite lacking a coach and GM, the club has announced Terrance McLean will serve in the role of director of operations as that job hunt begins.
“We’re very excited to have this opportunity to join the CRJHL," McLean said. We’ve been interested for a few years, however with COVID-19, the timing just wasn’t there. We are pleased to be able to bring a franchise to Beausejour.”
